Lake Mburo National Park, Uganda’s smallest savannah park, offers a convenient getaway for wildlife enthusiasts from Kampala and Entebbe. Just a short distance away—240 km from Kampala and 290 km from Entebbe—this park is perfect for those interested in wildlife safaris, birding, and game viewing. Many of our Uganda tour packages include Lake Mburo as a key destination, especially for travelers seeking exceptional bird-watching experiences. It’s also just a short drive from Mbarara, the largest town in Western Uganda, and near Kiruhura, the hometown of the Ugandan president.
The park, covering 260 square kilometers, can be reached in about three hours by road, making it an ideal destination for those seeking an easily accessible wildlife adventure. Gazetted in 1933 as a controlled hunting area and upgraded to a game reserve in 1963, Lake Mburo was officially designated as a national park in 1983. Despite its small size, Lake Mburo National Park boasts a unique ecosystem and rich biodiversity.
The story behind the park’s name involves two brothers, Mburo and Kigarama, who lived in the low-lying savannah plains, an area traditionally known as Kaaro Karungi. One night, Kigarama dreamt of a massive flood and warned his brother. While Kigarama took the dream seriously and moved to higher ground, Mburo dismissed the warning. The flood eventually came, drowning Mburo and his property, thus naming the lake “Mburo” and the surrounding hills after Kigarama. Our local guides are ready to share this fascinating tale during your visit.
