Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is one of Uganda’s most iconic destinations, offering an unparalleled wildlife experience. Located in southwestern Uganda on the edge of the Rift Valley, Bwindi is known for its mist-shrouded hills and ancient rainforest, one of the oldest in Uganda, dating back over 25,000 years. This remarkable forest is home to nearly 400 plant species and a rich diversity of wildlife, making it a must-visit for nature lovers.
Famed for its population of mountain gorillas, Bwindi is home to an estimated 459 of these majestic creatures, accounting for nearly half of the world’s population. Among these, several groups are habituated for trekking, including the Mubare gorilla group, which was the first to be available for tourism in 1993. Currently, nine gorilla groups are available for tourism, and one is dedicated to research.
In addition to gorillas, Bwindi’s lush forests are home to 120 species of mammals, including chimpanzees, baboons, elephants, and antelopes. The park is also a birdwatcher’s paradise, with around 350 bird species, including 23 Albertine Rift endemics. For butterfly enthusiasts, Bwindi shelters over 200 species, eight of which are Albertine Rift endemics, alongside a variety of reptiles.
The park’s surrounding areas, particularly Buhoma and Nkuringo, offer an array of accommodations ranging from luxury lodges to rustic bandas and budget campsites. Visitors can also immerse themselves in local cultures by engaging with the Bakiga and Batwa Pygmy communities through cultural performances, workshops, and village tours.
With Sekekeka Tours and Travel, you can explore the wonders of Bwindi and experience unforgettable encounters with wildlife and the rich cultural heritage of this remarkable region.
Deep in the heart of Uganda’s breathtaking Bwindi Impenetrable Forest lies Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp, an astonishing lodge where a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience the majesty of one of Africa’s most remarkable creatures awaits.
One of the most exciting features of Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp is its unrivalled position, located just inside the gates to the forest and a five-minute walk from the Uganda Wildlife Authority Centre. This is where gorilla trekking adventures begin, however gorilla families have been known to pay a visit to the camp itself – just imagine the magic of waking up to the sight of a magnificent great ape.
A hymn to eco-conscious design, the lodge blends effortlessly with the dramatic mountain landscape, offering seclusion and space amidst ancient rainforest; with only ten private luxury tents, an intimate and exclusive experience is guaranteed.
Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp’s communal area is equally impressive, with a comfortable lounge, elegant dining area and a well-stocked bar offering soaring views over the lush rainforest. Come dusk, guests gather around the central campfire under glittering, star-strewn skies and swap stories of that day’s adventures to the tune of the night chorus.
The splendour of Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp goes beyond its luxurious accommodations and proximity to the awesome gorillas. Guests are also invited to interact with the local community through Sanctuary’s philanthropic projects. This experience offers a unique glimpse into the lives of the semi-nomadic Batwa people, the original dwellers of the forest.
