Lakes

Located within the African Great Lakes region, Uganda is renowned for its vast water bodies, with nearly one-fifth of the country covered by open water and wetlands. These lakes are not only crucial for Uganda’s rich biodiversity but also play a significant role in the nation’s economy. However, environmental challenges pose a growing threat to their future.

The African Great Lakes region includes several countries surrounding these major lakes, such as Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya, Malawi, Rwanda, and Tanzania. In Uganda, three of these lakes — Lake Victoria, Lake Albert, and Lake Edward — are partially located within its borders. These lakes are interconnected through the White Nile, one of the two main tributaries of the Nile River.
